M.2 SSDs are smaller and require specific slots on your motherboard.
- Open Your Computer Case: Remove the side panel(s) of your desktop PC case or open your laptop/mini PC as per its manual.
- Locate the M.2 Slot: Find the M.2 slot(s) on your motherboard. They are thin, horizontal slots, often with a small screw hole at the end and possibly a heatsink covering them. Consult your motherboard manual for their exact location and which PCIe generation they support.
- Remove M.2 Heatsink (if present): If your motherboard has an M.2 heatsink, gently unscrew and remove it. Some motherboards have thermal pads under the heatsink; ensure they are intact or replace them if damaged.
- Install the Standoff: Locate the small metal standoff screw hole at the end of the M.2 slot that matches the length of your M.2 SSD (e.g., 2280 means 80mm long). If the standoff isn't pre-installed, screw it in.
- Insert the M.2 SSD:
- Hold the M.2 SSD by its edges.
- Align the notch on the SSD's gold contacts with the ridge in the M.2 slot.
- Gently insert the SSD into the slot at a slight downward angle (about 15-30 degrees). Push firmly but without excessive force until the gold contacts are fully seated.
- Secure the SSD: Once inserted, push the M.2 SSD down until it's flat against the motherboard and resting on the standoff. Secure it with the small M.2 screw into the standoff. Some motherboards have a tool-less plastic latch instead of a screw.
- Reinstall M.2 Heatsink (if removed): If you removed a heatsink, reattach it over the M.2 SSD, ensuring proper contact with the thermal pad.
- Close the Case: Close your computer case, reconnect power, and power on.
