Generally, new SD and microSD cards come pre-formatted from the factory using a standard file system like FAT32 or exFAT by the SD Association's formatter. So, you can often use them directly in a PC without reformatting.
However, it is highly recommended to format the card within the specific device (camera, smartphone, drone) where you intend to use it before its first use, and periodically thereafter (e.g., before each major photoshoot or project).
- Why Format in Device? Formatting in the device optimizes the card's file system for that specific device's hardware and software, potentially improving performance and stability, and reducing the chance of compatibility issues or errors.
- Data Erasure: Be aware that formatting will erase ALL data on the card. Always back up important files first.
