Here are the general steps for installing UDIMM RAM:
- Open Your Computer Case: Depending on your computer's case design, use a screwdriver to remove the side panel or open the case.
- Locate the Memory Slots: Memory slots are typically located on either side of the CPU socket. They are long, slender slots with clips on both ends. Your motherboard manual will clearly label the position and numbering of each slot (e.g., DIMM_A1, DIMM_A2, DIMM_B1, DIMM_B2).
*Motherboard vendor recommendations to place memory on A2 if single, A2/B2 slot if kit.
- Open the Memory Slot Clips: Before installing the memory, you need to push the clips on both ends of the memory slot outwards to open them. On some motherboards, only one clip is movable, while the other end is fixed; this is normal.
- Align the Memory Module with the Slot:
- Key Notch: Each memory module's gold contact edge has a "key notch" (or cutout) that corresponds to a "ridge" on the memory slot. This design ensures the memory can only be inserted in the correct orientation. Be sure to align it carefully and never force the module in. Note that DDR4 and DDR5 modules have different key notch positions.
- Gold Contacts: Avoid touching the gold connector pins on the memory module. Handle the module by its side edges.
- Apply Even Pressure and Insert: Once the memory module is aligned with the slot, place your thumbs on the top ends of the module and apply even, vertical downward pressure. You'll feel the memory slowly slide into the slot.
- Crucial Tip: This step may require a fair amount of force (some manufacturers indicate 15-30 pounds of force); don't be afraid to apply firm pressure. When the memory module is fully seated, the clips on both ends will automatically snap back into place, locking the module securely. You should hear an audible "click."
- Verify Secure Installation: Ensure the memory module is completely flush with the slot, not tilted, and that both clips are fully locked. The gold contacts should be almost entirely recessed into the slot, with very little exposed. If the module appears uneven or not fully locked, carefully remove it and repeat the insertion process.
- Repeat for Additional Modules: If you are installing multiple memory modules, repeat the above steps for each one.
Reassemble and Power On: Once all memory modules are securely installed, close your computer case, reconnect the power cord, and power on your computer.
